5 Things You Probably Didn't Know About the Vaal Dam
The Vaal Dam is one of South Africa's most important water sources, but there's much more to it than boating, fishing and beautiful sunsets!
Here are five interesting facts that might surprise you.

1. It has over 800 km of shoreline!
The Vaal Dam covers approximately 320 km² when full, with a shoreline stretching over 800 km. That's a lot of waterfront to explore!
2. Its water travels all the way from Lesotho
Not all the water in the Vaal Dam comes from local rainfall. The Lesotho Highlands Water Project transfers water into the Vaal River system, helping supply Gauteng.
3. It has an island with a secret history
The dam has an island approximately 5 km long, reportedly once used for secret meetings by the apartheid government. It later became associated with the famous Round the Island yacht race.
4. The dam wall was raised twice!
Originally completed in 1938, the dam underwent major expansions in the 1950s and again in 1985 to increase its storage capacity as water demand grew.
5. Almost 2 metres of water can evaporate annually
Because of its enormous surface area, the Vaal Dam loses significant amounts of water through evaporation. Estimates suggest evaporation can reach approximately 5 mm per day, equivalent to almost 2 metres annually!
